I saw this movie
in July of 2002 and recently obtained the DVD in the Men In Black Double Feature. In
the film, Jay, now in charge of the majority of operations in the Men In Black, has to bring Kay back to MIB (along with his
memory) in order to uncover a twenty-five-year old secret that has the potential to annihilate the planet. The movie overall is ok, but badly lacking in originality from the original “Men In Black,”
which is probably responsible for this movie only receiving two stars from the rating association, unlike its predescessor,
which received three stars.
The plot was very stable,
with a nice bump in Frankie the Pug’s involvement in the film. My dad objected
to Jay’s apparent dominance; however in the original, Kay stated at the end that he was looking for a replacement. Before Jay took his place, he was in charge of almost everything in MIB. So I found this a logical growth in character for Jay.
While I found the seductive
qualities of Serlina (the Kylothian who looked for the light for twenty-five years before tracing it to Earth) superfluous
and unnecessary, her aggressive character, as well as the special effects of her plant-like transformation, are very good.
As mentioned earlier, the
glaring flaw that brought this movie down for me was the apparent rehashing of an object that is about to destroy Earth. To use a similar plot line twice has the detrimental potential of losing an audience’s
interest. It would have been better for the writer to use a plot such as an extension
of Jara breaking out of prison for a plotline. Also, I felt that the discontinuation
of Elle’s character was another flaw. She should have stayed in the film,
since she officially becomes a member of the MIB in the previous film.
However, the humorous moments
alone make this film worth purchasing on DVD. I give this film two and a half
stars out of four for humor.
